Freeview is due to get some serious investment from the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Arqiva, part of the Digital UK group, that will see some big changes introduced to the connected service to turn it into a hybrid platform. What is Freeview Play, when is it coming to my TV and how can I get it? What is Freeview Bundle Builder and when is it coming? The money will be pumped into Freeview over the next five years, with the first big change coming in the form of a mobile app. The app will act as a hub where users can watch live TV on smartphones and tablets, as well as content from all the catch-up services available through the Freeview Play platform. This means the Freeview app could potentially be more useful than the Sky Q app, as it will be one of the only places you can watch content from all the major catch-up services in one place. Other updates to the Freeview Play platform will eventually include a restart function that will let you watch a programme from th...

OpenSignal has published a new report based on the study of overall download speeds of telecom operators in India. The new report, however, is not a standard summary of how the telcos have performed over a course of few months and is actually based on ten months of overall download speeds of India’s four major 4G providers - Airtel, Jio, Vodafone and Idea. As per the study, which commenced in May 2017 and ended in February 2018, Airtel is the most consistent network operator which started off with the highest overall download speed but somewhere on the way, lost to Reliance Jio and then again regained the top position by February 2018, with Jio coming in second. It should be noted that the alongside the average 4G speed of the operators, the report also takes 3G speed and network availability into account. The OpenSignal report pegs Airtel, Jio, Airtel and Idea as the top network performers, and the first thing that comes to notice is that from June, 2017 till August 20...

Google Pixel 3 XL flaunts every angle in revealing prototype leak

Google's next smartphone - the Pixel 3 - has surfaced online in a series of photos showing the phone from all sides. Originally shared with XDA Developers , the website returned to the source of the original pictures and managed to coax out some more, showing us a little more detail around the Pixel 3 XL design. The source says that it's not metal or plastic, that the back is in fact all glass. This has lead to some speculation that the Pixel 3 XL might offer wireless charging, something that was dropped from the Nexus devices a few years ago. That's just speculation, however. What's interesting is that it looks as though the top is glossy (as it was on the Pixel and Pixel 2), while the bottom section of the rear is frosted. There's also talk that the squeezable sides will be retained in the new Pixel 3. Originally an HTC idea, it appeared on the Pixel 2 models and it appears it's going to be on the Pixel 3 too. Is that a game changer? Not really - we...
Make a call even if your phone battery is dead with EE's smart number tech

EE's new 'smart number' tech means you can make a call even when you don't have your phone or it has run out of battery. Initially available across Apple devices including iPads, Macs and the Apple Watch, the service essentially enables up to five other devices to use your phone number to send texts and make calls. While the primary device needs to be on EE, the others don't need to be - the system uses the now-familiar Wi-Fi Calling tech. EE says the data used by the service through another network or on Wi-Fi is minimal, around 10MB for a 30 minute call. Multiple calls can also be made at the same time on different devices which is rather clever, though as you'd expect the calls will still come out of your minutes allowance if they're using your number. You're also able to 'hand off' calls to other devices - this uses Apple's Handoff tech based around devices linked to your iCloud account so you can pick up the call via the app ...

Vodafone Smart N9 offers a big screen, attractive price, and parental control features

The Vodafone Smart N9 is pitched as something of a "my first smartphone" proposition. Priced to make it accessible to many, this £109 ( pay as you go, £18 a month on contract ) Vodafone phone offers some of the latest smartphone tech in its svelte body. On the front is a 5.5-inch 1440 x 720 display, moving to 18:9 aspect, so it's fully in-step with the latest trend in smartphones. While it doesn’t have the highest resolution, the 295ppi display is nice and vibrant - it doesn't look like the display on a budget phone, so that's a good starting point for a device of this type. Having an 18:9 display means you get a good size of handset - you get all that display without it getting too wide. It's only 68.8mm wide and only 8.5mm thick, a far cry from the chunky phones that once sat at this end of the market. It launched running Android 8.1 Oreo - the latest version of Google's software and Vodafone has mostly kept it free from bloat. There's a couple...

BMW X2 review: Into the blue?

The BMW X-series car revolution began in 1999, with the X5. Since then we've had X6, X4, X3 and X1. But BMW has never made an X2. Until now. So what is it? The X2 shares much of its underpinnings with the X1 SUV. But, shock-horror for a BMW, it's based on a front-wheel drive set-up if you want the petrol version. Best SUVs 2018: From crossover to Range Rover which are kings of the road Which might seem odd, as the X brand implies off-road and four-wheel drive – which is exactly what you can get with the not-so-snappily named X2 xDrive 20d M-Sport, as on test here. A curious proposition If you're looking at it thinking 'it looks like a slightly higher 1 Series', then you'd be right. While the X2 shares its wheelbase with the X1, it's 20mm shorter and 69mm lower. It's only 100mm higher than a 1 series hatch. In reality, this X car is a high-riding hatchback – and a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz GLA. While the X2 is a little smaller, you...

The Elder Scrolls has been announced for mobile. The Elder Scrolls: Blades is a forthcoming role-playing game you can play on the go, right on your iPhone X or Android handset. But it's so much more than that besides. The vision of this game is huge: in addition to being mobile first, Blades will be available for a wider range of platforms, including high-end PCs and virtual reality platforms. Bethesda E3 2018 showcase: All the games from #BE3 and how to watch it again Better still, as it's a cross-platform release, irrelevant of which source device you're using to play, all players will be present in the same world. So you might be playing one-handed on your mobile phone against someone else half way around the world who's donning a VR headset. The Elder Scrolls: Blades features some interesting looking mechanics, such as the ability to play in both portrait and landscape mode on mobile devices. The combat is obviously different to the series' established g...
